Cementerio La Reina, Cienfuegos

In 1836 this lower portion of land belonging to the village not only came as far west Arango Avenue. It was decided by the authorities then moved the cemetery was in Santa Elena-Velazco apple-Santa Cruz-Casals for the site where today is as a historical relic and national monument in the process of disappearing, despite the efforts made, for lack of funds for restoration.
The reason for the move was simple: the people away from possible contagion dead bodies of cholera or other infectious diseases. Seems to have influenced this decision the health campaign of Dr. Tomas Romay Chacon and the edifying of the Espada Cemetery in Havana in 1805, which took some construction characteristics and geographic location. Note that in Cienfuegos winds blow regularly from the south-southeast during the day, and north-northeast at night, and so both the daytime sea breeze as night virazón lead the impurities from the air to the sea, moving away from population center. Location very well thought that came true in 1839.

Varadero morning

Varadero morning by Rey Cuba
Varadero morning, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

I hope you enjoy it.

A few days ago I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph corners out of the former Havana, now divided into two provinces and called Mayabeque and Artemisa, with my brother and friend Rolando Vazquez, painter, sculptor, teacher, father and friend. His vision of society, his journey through life and continues to influence weight in my life, were his words the ones that allowed me to see the city around me different, it was through his work that I understood that we all need to tell our stories, the best way that we can.

He has the gift of gab, assisting him also sculpture, painting, photography and printmaking, is credited with having found a way to inspire many young, to give wings to their creative projects as well as it did with me for many years. He is a potential creator and lover of life in its purest forms.

It was he who saw this tree while touring some Quivican roads, once again showing me that there is beauty in the simplest things of life.

Thanks for all Roland.

El comienzo

El comienzo by Rey Cuba
El comienzo, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

Like any other day I went looking for something special, trying to scrutinize a space, a place that would stay forever in my mind, the entry of a gate stopped my march and I was forced to wait for the traffic on the other side until the road were cleared and it was there, just then when I found the space between my mind, and my desire to let my eyes go, enjoy this magnificent spectacle that surrounded me without knowing it and even breathing hard for fear of losing the light, allow me take this moment that I think still eternal.

Havana Taxi stories

Havana Taxi stories by Rey Cuba
Havana Taxi stories, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

The city saw every sunrise tons of metal with different colors squashed into the busiest arteries. The young drivers will try to make the best, moving from one place to another in the city for students, workers, people who swapped their stories from one side to another, in a city that today is awakened in the middle of a strange wind for this time of the year.

During the day each of these drivers must find a way to fill their old cars with passage as much as possible, unwittingly different stories reach their ears, all colours, flavors and nuances sometimes sublime, sometimes exhausting.

And do not stop and look like bees in searchof the every day sustenance, while they weave in their seats the passage of history.

Felipe

Felipe by Rey Cuba
Felipe, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

Felipe has 73, at this point will no longer learn kung fu or piloting a plane, nor will not travel to the Grand Canyon or visit the pyramids of Egypt.

Felipe has lived all his life in Quivican, it has never moved, and the only change that today holds its housing is a shingle roof replacing the roof of guano as a cyclone took away.

Speaking proudly of their family, his son from another marriage, now is a grown man and his daughter grandchildren most small accompany him only metres from his place.

Felipe is afraid to walk far because a week ago is lost on the way to the village of Quivican, it was found by a friend of her daughter 10 km away from the town.

Today his cow dropped the mooring ropes and step into the middle of the undergrowth, Felipe came out after her and soon he realized that he could be lose again, so he started the return and not to be missed continued its path to routes along railways passing outside his home.

This pathways railway that day were his support and his family while working repairing them for railways and prides itself on being of the few that can be mounted on the special train traveling from Havana to Santiago if needed, without paying the ticket.

Felipe has a wide smile, a slow step for years and after we end our conversation, he walked away to Rosa´s place, his daughter living across the railroad lines.

Felipe tells her the news and Rosa invited him to their little house where a mango juice prepared recently awaits.

Felipe sits inside, puts his machete beside the Chair and continues telling his stories.

Long Beach

Havana with his long wall offers us many surprises along the way. I was going home and some boys were taking a bath with the waves that swept this area Malecón. I noticed that clung to the wall so that the force of the water not drag beyond.

The boys were joined by a whole family who came up with a cooler with beer inside, they started their own party over this makeshift beach and had a good time, the force of the waves shot down several and all broke out laughing every time this happened.

One of them remained all along the edge of the street, where the waves could not touch him, he was enjoying from afar. I was very close to drop the camera and come home soaked in water as these habaneros.

We left early, backpacks to shoulder with our cameras, ready to capture some of the movement of the city.

People of all ages gathered and left in a tight place around us, seeing us with cameras and asking us photos were the same thing, smiled and look in complicity with the lenses.

Laura urge me to stay longer at the end of the avenue and it was in these few meters we find an endless number of different people, some finishing, others sat as this old man. and granddaughter next, hoping to end the march, to begin them to clean the avenue.
