Habaneros

Habaneros, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

I remember as a teenager my father advising us on what could be fashion and what not.

Fashions has changed so much over the years, as well as styles, at the past wearing a tattoo was at least in Cuba, identified with people who were in prison or were sailors.

Today is as common as breathing, for a while I had seeing among the youngest there is a tendency to show wear underwear and pants down.

I imagine that being a tropical country like this, at some point will fashion turn women to wear bikini at the streets, who knows if at some point topless, well I hope to be alive when that time comes.

Societies are rapidly changing patterns, but bein in dizzying race towards a more casual living, perhaps.

Who knows if at some point end up in the caves, and as this world had turn into a female dominated one, bringing able to finish us (males) with the mallet in the head and dragging along the ground.

On this photo here are some habaneritos of these moments with their favorite passion, soccer.

Swinging hopes, decisions, marathons of life, so we run into it every day.

I had in my memory those other moments where swing was just that, nothing more or less, trying to reach higher and enjoy the ups and downs ... without thinking I moved enjoying the laughter and dreams.

Last Saturday dawned raining cats and dogs, so all painted to spend the day at home.

I found a wonderful opportunity to start practicing a bit with strobist lighting and we found the task of assembling the set.

2 yongnuo 560 flash behind two translucent umbrellas, a flash Metz 48 AF-1 bare, but a tripod formed the basis of the whole scene.

Convincing the princesses didn´t took to much time, on the other hand keep them focused, well that took a bit of work, because among their poses taken from movies and their tricky moves, we had a good time.

Sure I proposed to them from time to time a different scene, they just wanted to show jumping in the air, or jumping into the "water" (carpet), while at some point I comment, what about if we drop a few rose petals on a book.

Their eyes opened and began hasty in approving the torture. First it was I who in one hand and camera in the other petals started trying to simultaneously with the shooting.

We then call Laura, who had already left the scene and was responsible for much more important tasks (preparing food), she also tried several times, then Claudia, Ana Paula later and just not find the photo we all want it. (leaves and petals flying coming to the book) and the right lighting.

After reviewing the photos and finally said here is the story...and told the models Claudia (by the left side) were reading a book of charms and some leaves begin to take flight toward the land of dreams, Ana Paula (model right, well there no longer remains any other model, but if I do not say she can be mad) considering the effects of the spell and waiting for their turn to read the book.

Claudia at the end did not go so convinced with the story ... But here's the picture.

Waiting the wave

Waiting the wave by Rey Cuba
Waiting the wave, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

And we were expectating, waiting for the moment, like a wave arriving at the coast. Static, questioning our every day, to be falling apart and we see the landscape change as a beach after a storm.

We scan the horizon and we were calm, remain motionless as if we got a better response.

Dreams have to reconvert into passion and immobility in action. I hope that new steps will not lead us to the swamp.

At this stop we got all out and I was focus on shooting from above the road, later when I remove the eye in the viewfinder, I saw the other three photographers strewn everywhere taking pictures of this beautiful place.

For me it was like coming home to my grandmother´s as a child, my grandmother lived in the mountains of the most intricate of the Sierra Maestra, so I was more than identified when I found this high plateau area.

The laundry at the back of the house, the animals grazing near the house that gives them food and shelter. The stones at the entrance to avoid the mud from rainy days, even the odors seems familiar to me.

I struggled to understand that I was there to shoot some photos, I went back to my childhood, I went in search of the gentle breeze under the shade of the trees, or the thrilling cold stream water.

Then I came out of my reverie to notice the legion of photographers who accompanied me in search of his memory bit.

The Morrillo is another of those places on this island where land and sea meet to make way for the majesty of each day.

This is one of the first photos I shoot last Saturday while I was out with Laura, Gilberto and Thai. We spent a wonderful day, which unfortunately for them I didn´t stop talking all day long, I guess everyone has finished wondering when I will quiet for a while.

And we went out of the city, away from the known path, to get into other realities, other colors, other perspectives of life.

There are smiles despite the gray, colors despite the dust of everyday life.

This was our first stop on the road, Laura and Thai wait while Gilbe and I went out of the car and began shooting from different angles, it would be good to see the photos Gilberto took from this spot on the road.

It's always good to enjoy life and friends.

Sometimes I tend to over study everything, thinking over an over, before launching into anything, this time comes to strobist, I had read Strobist I and II like five times and still doesn´t feel confident enough to show it.

This photo with some others have been in my computer for a few months, resting and I understand that the only way of learn is to share it and obtain the critics from the people who already knows it.

This was shot with Nikon D300s , Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens, 3 yongnuo 560 flash through 2 white umbrellas. Trigger by remote Yongnuo remote wireless controlers and a golden 5x1 reflector.

One of the light was at 45 angle at right and the other was use as a hair light, the golden reflector on the left side and a naked flash at background.

ISO 200, f/5.6 , 1/160.
Taken in Havana, Cuba

And I look at each of your neighbors, I find myself in every walk through the neighborhood.

I remember as a kid playing with my friends and I wonder how much time has elapsed, How did I became this person? When and where the opinions came? Wounds, hopes and disappointments sorround me at present.

At what point did I stop believing that anything was possible?, when I stop believing I could manage any situation?, my recurrent word was...! I have plenty of time to prove it!

A part of me is still open to change, while another part worries on how to solve it.

When I study, the dreams remains and is one of the few ways that the establishment won´t steal my hopes.

The more corageous ones despite the hurricanes of live, the continued heaviness of days, maintain their love and dedication, above all nobility.

It is so common today, the theory of buying, use and dispose, everything within this postmodern world we are living it, sometimes I wonder how we can hold it.

Today everything is made to last a certain period of time and no matter if We cared much or little, is almost programmed to break in a given time, that way the industries and factories are producing constantly.

The junk we have accumulated over the last 20 years should be much more than in previous centuries.

No wonder why my daughters and I found ourselves surprised to stop in front of places that the men built for posterity.

It seems that this line of thinking is already outdated.

As the days draw their fuzzy contours and the bank is no longer the same, I am about to scan the horizon.

It seems as if the doubts surround the castle of hope these days.

Yesterday we had a holiday in Cuba and we departure with the company of our lenses to try to capture a bit of every day in this little island in the Caribbean.

The city welcomed us with rain early, but we decided to persist and then gave us an afternoon full of warmth and light.

There are days when I could not walk across a bridge like this one, as the imbalance weight my steps, so I look at the faces of my countrymen, their strength to bounce back from adversity, their every day dedication and I ask myself to be a little harder.

There are days when I want to smile more and bother less, but not every day I am capable of.

Getting out of the city that sometimes chokes me, somtimes is a most.

That is why the road is beneath us and we run away in search of light and peace in the eyes, the soft-spoken and enjoy every day.

And the color runs through the veins, reactivating the circulation of love and thoughts.

Shadow dreams

Shadow dreams by Rey Cuba
Shadow dreams, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

There are times when I think the gray around me drown me, and then I remember that gray is not black, the light must be reflected somewhere.

Seeking the light, deep breath and say, no other strokes that's take to arrive, we must strive to feel better about ourself.

Sometimes we engage Laura and I discussing our photos, what to say, how to say it, when to say, to what language to speak.

Those discussions, sometimes heated discussions, make us grow both, through dialogue allow us to leave the gray, monotonous and continuous scrutiny of every day.

She calls these photos, the exaltation of the old, to me is the history of the places to wander as a child.

I look back and I feel certain friendliness and remember that for many not always everything is clean, nice, friendly, sometimes you are in the mud and you need to take to walk, but you have to learn how to move around, to reach the mainland. At least that land that as flag raised by many and not always have to be yours.

Most of the time I meditate on the hard times of the past who ultimately are the ones that keep me sane today.

This one was made while I was walking Old Havana with Laura, Juan and David.

Hugs and happy weekend everyone.

Francisco

Francisco by Rey Cuba
Francisco, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

He is Francisco a retired worker from the docks near by, he now works picking and selecting metal recycling materials.

He was really cooperative and willing to help us while we walked through this Old Havana street. He event asked for a photo, David and I make our shots.

Francisco was smiling all the time while the rest of us were enjoying the Saturday weekend, he was working hard, at this moment resting at the shadow.

Every time I look at this photo I remember why I should smile more.

Patricia

Patricia, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

Patricia was sitting at shore, watching other kids playing, his face showed the joy of others, but on the other hand, the words left his mouth with great sadness when I asked her why did not bathe.

"My dad will not let me" ... said with sad eyes and turned his face to the soft morning sun.

Blue old Havana Car

Blue old Havana Car, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

As we walked through Havana with Juan, Laura and David, I started wondering why I feel so reluctant to shop the old cars going through Havana.

I don´t know if it´s because my brothers never taught me how to drive their old 50´s Chevrolet, or because every photographer I run into is doing the same.

The end point is that I am loosing part of Cuba and my city history, so I will promise myself doing it the best way I can. It doesn´t mean this is the one, but it portraits an idea I have flooding around.

Have a very good weekend my friends.

There is always hope

There is always hope by Rey Cuba
There is always hope, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

In the mist, when we hit every day or lose the step, there is always hope.

The road is not always clear, sometimes green, sometimes without space. But a road though not always seem clear way.

Golden Fishermen...Malecon, Cuba

It was Friday afternoon, Laura, Claudia and I went for a walk in the harbor of Havana, on entry we find a group of fishermen who showed their commitment to capture some loot from the sea.

Some taking it very seriously, others letting time passing by, while most immersed themselves in a fight to show their skills and knowledge of this ancient activity.

But while they make it, it was hard to stop talking, giving advice, encouraging each other. It's like a big family had come together at the edge of the Malecon to enjoy the soft touches of the evening light.

Laura did not really like the photo, she says it remembers an HDR photo and really what I used in this case was a filling flash, exposing for the background. After a bit of tweaking in LR and PS to give the finishing touches.

The fallen king

The fallen king by Rey Cuba
The fallen king, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

Sometimes all you need is a push to go further, others have so clearly the next step that, sometimes scares me how diffuse is mine.

Yesterday some colleagues commented that the basis for advance is the organization, we should be organized first, then we can carry on any project, but what is the correct path? Which door to knock next?

All we need is an starting point, instead of moving with falling head amid the trials and daily concerns, I would rather take walking, playing and if a door closes then i'll try another, but occasionally I wonder, I'm doing well , what's the purpose of this struggle.

As humans we always compare ourselves whit some others, we measure, we face different steps and all try not to stumble back down.

I hope I never forget my origins, and not have to walk with his head down. Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend.

El rayo...Artemisa, Cuba

El rayo...Artemisa, Cuba by Rey Cuba
El rayo...Artemisa, Cuba, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

This Saturday I had to help a friend and while I was waiting decided to take my camera and go out to shot new images within this hot summer.

Some places are magical and this one wasn´t the exception, and the Cuban coast populations settled on its shores have a variety of forms and impressive shapes.

At the end of the evening at home, I was so thankful that I helped my friend, thanks to him I visited this town at a time that never asisted before.
