And you stay as a monument to the years early dreams searches, wizard of smiles, sadness interpreter marked by time. Many of your seats gave shelter to passers from this and other cities, many would be marked forever with what happened inside.

Old Havana streets

It is beautiful to look into the history of places in Havana, this building is on the corner of Monserrate and Empedrado.

Recently while returning with Laura to take photos for an assignment, This location caught my attention, looking at its history the place has had many uses ... from cavalry barracks in 1764, houses the Ministry of Defence until administrative headquarters of the National Museum today ...

Empedrado street is the famous for various reasons, it was the first paved road in the entire city and it is the place where the famous habanera Bodeguita del Medio is located.

This corner served me as a motivator to tour the city again looking for its story.

Cienfuegos...Cuba Photography

I am one of those that dawns every day to a good early, use to wake up and peer  out the window at home and my eyes go in search of the light that surrounds us.

This morning in Cienfuegos as is my custom i went in search of the good energies of beginning of the year and while the sun warmed my body, i devoted to enjoy the morning reflexes.

I hope someday to be able to reflect in my photos a part of what my eyes breathe through the light.

Avenida 54

Avenida 54 by Rey Cuba
Avenida 54, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

There are places that mark our steps and invite us to explore them, Cienfuegos 4:00 pm, in the interior of the church began the first mass of 2012 to the city's inhabitants and parishioners crowding into the place.

Outside a lukewarm light of Sunday filled the street, a few passers-by, glances flocked on others who like me wandered around the city looking for images, we meet with a group of visitors from other countries that turn the spaces in amalgams of Nikon´s, Canon´s, Sony´s, large and small lenses, by sharing some of their photos with the inhabitants of the place.

An anthill of photographers filled with alternating silences the 54 Avenue, on the one hand the songs of the first mass, competing only with one click of the triggers and the singing of the birds.

I would like a little house in the high to invite my friends, climbing on the path of the light and join me in this task it is to live.

I would like a little house in the high that brings together those who with their creation daily, his dedication, friendship without brake pass the threshold of my door.

I would like a little house in the high that invites us to look beyond the horizon and we are glad the hearts.

I would like a little house in the high to bring those who accompany me each day and know how to love well.

The "Plaza Vieja" was built in the 17th century and at the time was called "Plaza Nueva", some historians the named as the second plaza built after the "Plaza de Armas" and hosts hundreds of memories, shapes, moments for many Cubans.

Ramón Vázquez is one of them and this particular place brings him wonderful memories of other times.

Few days ago while waiting the opening of the expo "Comodín" from Rolando Vázquez, we talked about and in his eyes i found the light of stories from a past so present in its rich memory.

Where today the light illuminates the building´s corner but already 64 years ago, Ramon took his first job, he was in his 18 years and moved to Havana from the center of the country, here thought find better luck for his efforts and untiring will.

Despite the fact that of his grey hair combs more than 80 years, he recounted the stories of the place with absolute clarity, recalling not only the names of the owner of the local, but in addition to regular clients or the prices of articles, there he used to sell something of quartermaster carrying supplies and food.

Ramon told me about how the polish Paul began by selling a sweet guava exquisite in a mobile cart, but its sweet contained a secret not revealed and was so big his success that as soon as the business grew, the polish guy buy a big candy store on the corner of Mercaderes y Teniente Rey, where today dominates a bar-restaurant.

In the background you will see at the left corner a building on the corner, on the second floor a lady (Joaquina), by 2 pesos a week she cooked an exquisite lunch and he was allowed to sleep a short nap each afternoon.

In this plaza played the best football players of the time, there was no stadium for them and it was so much the quality gather there, that some of them played on the outside of Cuba.

Sellers of all kinds inhabited the place, warehouses, shops, inns, roosting in the plaza. Congregated around it with the moments of leisure workers around the bay port and multiple histories of sailors and travellers, dreamers carves corners of the bars and canteens in this Plaza Vieja.

In the voice of Ramon, the energy of his steps and power of his words I found a part of the history of this city that lies submerged in the bottom of the memory.

Thanks Ramon for your example and your commitment , many good things for you and your family in 2012.

Will I be reflection of my parents
Will I be consistent with what i think
Will I be reflection of the light projected
Will I be part of a beaten path
Will I be shortly history for my children
Will I be part of a circus mounted.

I hope at least the next year, to accompany me more decisions to make the next step, retrace the ill harrows, disarm the strings of the past.

I hope that at least the next year, gives us the light that we have longed for.

Tirame un cabo

Tirame un cabo by Rey Cuba
Tirame un cabo, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

Not to bore you with the last photowalk to Hershey i will give you this photo that is part of the previous photowalk to the city of Matanzas.

As the Christmas holidays allow us to offer our help, best wishes and good deeds, I will tell you Vazquez history that day, who is always in christmas mode.

Vázquez is this type of guy who can and collaborates with others all the time, that´s what makes him a really good teacher, that day as we waited for his battery charges at home of one of the neighbors, we saw this boy trying to cut a piece of wood, but did not have the sufficient skills and gave them laps again and again looking at the piece of table.

Vázquez approached him and told him..you need helped?... without more words, he attempted to cut the wood and then fix it to the entrance of the corridor of the guys house.

In a minute two Cubans were prepared to work and chat, as if it were known each other forever, examples such as Vázquez are not scarse in Cuba and that is why I am proud of, because many us trying to keep almost always in Christmas mode.

Merry Christmas to you all.

parecer
que caer en el abismo
de la verdad.

Los maestros nunca enseñan la verdad
ni los reyes ni los Mesías,
los ejércitos no tienen la verdad
ni las leyes ni la astrología.

La verdad de la verdad
es que nunca es una
ni la mía, ni la de él, ni la tuya.
La verdad de la verdad
es que no es lo mismo
parecer
que caer en el abismo
de la verdad,
de la verdad.

It is impressive how much history builds up this place, there is so much to say or do.

I only hope that next year will bring to the residents a little more colour.

To all of you my friends as always wish you the best energies so that you can use them in the gray days to come.

This is a Cuban singer Carlos Varela song, it helps me during hard times.

Civilizacion

Civilizacion by Rey Cuba
Civilizacion, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

The renewal of all has become our daily bread for each day, today it intends to renew the computers every 2 years, the electronic gadgets every 1 year and up to the husbands and wives each time that we can.

Added to the fact that the prices always changing, the seasons change months in the year, the crazy temperatures , everything can be modified rapidly.

Sometimes we forget that the lever, or the invention of the wheel, were events that accelerated our growth of humanity and seem to forgotten stories from a remote past.

Today we become slaves of technology and we use much less than everything we have.

At the speed that we consume, within a few years the land with garbage will be larger than our houses.

I hope that we can give shelter to the new year to much light and love in our hearts, so the hectic life outside does not govern our steps.

Hershey inventariado

Hershey inventariado by Rey Cuba
Hershey inventariado, a photo by Rey Cuba on Flickr.

Over the years i have wanted to escape from the classifications, typecasting, of the names, of course that this does not mean that it was achieved and does not end up being classified, box, tied up of agreement some criterion in particular.

I feel that humanity has a compelling need to classify everything, naming it all sometimes by a fear immense to cease to exist.

The afternoon of Hershey can "classified" as a moment between friends, you can be inventoried as a "Photowalk", you need to be defined as an exchange between photographers.

I rather feel that the Hershey´s afternoon was filled with smiles and glances, felt and shared with the afternoons that other human beings in any part of this planet engaged to look at the world through 35mm and end up being classified as "photographers".

Taking this into account i will wish you all a classic 24-hour day filled with classified smiles and inventoried hugs.

Yesterday we finally checked out Laura www.flickr.com/photos/50791611@N04/ , Gilberto www.flickr.com/photos/gisaso/ , Sabrina and I to made our Photowalk and knowing the people of Hersey.

Much of its history, i was referred to by Gilberto that had visited the village before and knew it.

A brief summary Hershey ( Yes it is the same of the famous chocolates), purchased a plot of land and a giant sugar cane mill was built on part of their areas, during those years, Cuba was known for its sugar capacity, the central was 45 Km away from Havana and 45Km from Matanzas.

Next to this was planned and built electrical railroad, the first and only electrical in Cuba during these times.

The railroad will allow to carry the employees and the sugar using both the ports of Havana, as the Matanzas one, in this way, the famous chocolates at the time had with cuban sugar.

Today, there are the remains of this history and this small town is full of attractions and memories.

During the following days I will publish more photos of this wonderful place, as it always the Matanzas people characterized by been so friendly and polite, have allowed us to spend an afternoon very pleasant, the softness of the light was one of the delights that accompanied us.

I am sure that Gilberto and Laura will share much in the days to come.
